I captured this image of a porch flag after hearing a daring Memorial Day speech in South Deerfield, Massachusetts given by a veteran of the Vietnam War. As a small town honored the war dead and demonstrated national pride, he spoke from a soldier's perspective about the ruinous toll of armed conflict and decried the current war in Iraq. In this abstract, the twisted bands correspond with his message. The form that frames the flag resembles a tombstone, which then is covered by a luminous arc.
