My earliest "gestural" photographs, this sequence was taken on Petticoat Hill in Williamsburg, Massachusetts as the rising sun cast light into the treetops. Notice the shift in camera settings: 1) slowing down the film speed, 2) letting less light into the camera, and 3) extending the exposure. I discovered that these settings enabled me to "push pixels" with the camera and create abstract compositions. This method of moving the camera is dynamic. The last three images show how difficult it is to click the shutter at just the right moment. One hits the ground, the next the sky and the last the horizon line.
