Gestural Photography is like painting with pixels. The colors, textures, and lines of a scene are what interest me, and then what I manipulate by moving the camera to intensify the image.
The motion effects are not computer generated but are made in the field, usually by spinning or sweeping the camera as I snap a picture. With the in-camera display I review that picture, and take another and another based on what emerges. I repeat this process as long as needed to tease out features that catch my eye. The initial gestures are like preparatory sketches leading to an image that conveys the essence of the subject and moment.
In a sense, these pictures are found "accidentally on purpose." Granted, I am always watching for a creative spark and I work methodically, but it is the raw discovery that thrills me most about Gestural Photography.
